On April 24th, the Arizona Humane Society’s field dispatch team received a call from a Good Samaritan hiker who had ventured off the beaten path on Lookout Mountain.

Tucked away in a tiny nook, the hiker stumbled upon a dog that refused to move, prompting him to seek assistance from the Arizona Humane Society.

Despite the already overwhelming call volume, Kellie Dickerson and her director, Tracy Miller, didn’t hesitate to respond, embarking on a mission to rescue the elusive canine.

The hiker, who had patiently waited nearly two hours for help to arrive, dubbed the dog “Bright Eyes” – a fitting name, as her amber eyes were the only visible feature amidst her dirt-colored coat that blended seamlessly with her surroundings.

A Perfectly Camouflaged Companion

Though initially hesitant, the sweet pup allowed Kellie to pet her head, but extracting her from the den proved challenging.

Her fur was the exact same shade as the dusty terrain, rendering her nearly invisible to the untrained eye.

The rescuers quickly realized that “Bright Eyes” had adopted the perfect camouflage, likely as a survival tactic in her harsh, isolated environment.

As they inched closer, they noticed her sunken eyes and protruding ribs – telltale signs of dehydration and malnourishment.

A Daring Rescue Mission

With gentle coaxing, the rescuers successfully removed “Bright Eyes” from her hiding spot, revealing her dire condition – severely dehydrated, with torn paw pads and a laceration on her hind end.

Too weak to walk, the rescuers improvised, cradling the pup like a baby and taking turns carrying her down the treacherous, rocky trail.

The narrow path, slick with loose stones, posed a constant risk of losing their footing and further injuring the fragile canine.

Yet, Kellie and Tracy remained undeterred, their focus solely on getting “Bright Eyes” to safety.

Despite the arduous journey, “Bright Eyes” remained an absolute angel, seeming to understand that her rescuers were leading her to safety.

Her resilience and trust in her human companions were truly remarkable.

A New Lease on Life

Upon arrival at the Arizona Humane Society’s trauma hospital, “Bright Eyes” received immediate medical attention, including fluids, antibiotics, and pain medication.

The veterinary staff worked tirelessly to stabilize her condition, providing her with the nourishment and care she had been deprived of for so long.

According to Kellie, the timing of the rescue was critical, as the pup had likely been stranded for several days, her life hanging by a thread.

“She was just going to stay there until the end if that Good Samaritan hadn’t done this for her,” Kellie stated, her voice thick with emotion.

A Bittersweet Victory

While “Bright Eyes'” tale has a heartwarming ending, it also serves as a sobering reminder of the countless animals who face similar plights, abandoned and left to fend for themselves in unforgiving environments.

Her rescue was a victory, but it was also a bittersweet reminder of the ongoing battle against animal neglect and cruelty.

The Arizona Humane Society and organizations like it play a crucial role in advocating for these voiceless creatures, providing them with a second chance at life and love.
